The navy skort came out of the bag still wearing its tags, and I distrust anything that arrives that crisp at that hour of a school morning, so I inspected it the way a customs officer inspects a suitcase that is too clean. It is a girls Izod Approved Schoolwear pleated skort in navy polyester, and it has never once been worn, which makes it either a miracle or a very patient trap.
The pleats hold their lines like a row of tiny drawn blinds, and the polyester lining means the shorts are hidden under the skirt, ready for the monkey bars, the sprint to the bus, or the sudden cartwheel nobody authorized.
