These Wilfred Melina pants in light taupe are faux leather, which is to say polyurethane, and they have the rare good manners of never pretending otherwise. They come new with tags, so no previous engagement has left its mark upon them, and the straight leg gives a plain, composed line that asks nothing of the shoes beneath it except that they be sensible enough to deserve the introduction.
Taupe is a colour of tact: it declines to shout like black leather or to simper like cream, and manages to look both considered and slightly amused. The buyer will say she wants them for versatility, and she will be quite right, though the real attraction is that they make a Tuesday look as though it had been planned. A small vanity, but a well-dressed one.
